Improve Strato performance: long loading times - WordPress very slow
For some weeks now, we have increasingly noticed that the hosting packages at Strato are slow. WordPress performance there is sometimes a real problem, especially during peak times. You can find out here how to make your website faster at Strato and avoid long loading times.
Why WordPress is so slow at Strato
Strato is one of the best-known providers in the shared hosting sector. Due to the significantly increased internet usage and higher demands in general, Strato's infrastructure is probably simply overloaded. Too many customers share the server resources in mass hosting. In addition, WordPress requires more and more resources as the number of plugins increases. A PHP memory_limit of 256 MB is now the recommended minimum standard. For more complex sites, it should rather be 256 MB.
The servers have to cope with an immense number of simultaneously running PHP processes, file system accesses and database queries.
Make a Strato website faster
The following tips can help mitigate the issue somewhat and make WordPress faster on Strato in the standard hosting packages:
- Use the currently recommended PHP version (currently 8.3).
- Activate PHP Boost.
- Do not install any unnecessary plugins.
- Avoid resource-hungry plugins.
- For example, visitor counters, SSL plugins or file system scanners that run regularly.
- Make sure you have page caching.
Page cache - improve TTFB (Time to first byte)
Modern CMSs require server resources to generate every page. To prevent this from happening again for every visitor on every page change, caching plugins are a good solution. They store a page's HTML output temporarily and deliver this cached version much faster.
Recommended free plugins are "Cache Enabler", "WP Fastest Cache" and "WP Super Cache". Among the commercial plugins, "WP Rocket" is the best choice. In addition to page caching, it can also be used to implement many other performance-related optimizations.
Strato WordPress backend still extremely slow
Of course, page cache only applies to the public area (frontend) of the website. However, the long response times in the backend remain if the server performance is not right.
If the tips mentioned do not bring sufficient improvement, you should first contact Strato support. An upgrade to a higher plan may make sense.

I found the blog post yesterday. I was looking for a cause and a solution for my painfully slow Strato account. It takes 18sec. for my WordPress backend to start. Apparently the problem is still unchanged even after a year.
I contacted Strato with a comparative speed test and asked for improvement. Alternatively, I would like to cancel my account early.
I am curious to see the response...
Otherwise, maybe just try Joomla 4!

Strato support responds with links to all kinds of instructions, but not with a solution.
I had my website running at HostPress for testing. Here the backend and the website are "lightning fast"! It cannot be only due to the plugins.
Here are a few times measured with my phone:
- opening the link /wp-login.php = 51sec.
- starting the WP backend = 56sec.
- closing the WP backend = 90sec.
Comparison values with the provider HostPress:
- opening the link /wp-login.php = under 1sec.
- starting the WP backend = under 4sec.
- closing the WP backend = under 1sec.
I am waiting for the answer to my request to adjust the performance or release me early from the contract.
But as another comment also said, if the installation is packed with plugins, things quickly run out of steam.

Strato just shrugs its shoulders. With the "budget tariffs" they apparently don't want to put in much effort; it probably isn't worth it to them. Better to invest money in advertising than in support. In any case, I'm preparing to move the site and domain.
