Cost Trap: PHP Extended Support at Strato / 1und1
At the end of 2022, using an older PHP version (5.6 - 7.4) as part of ' PHP Extended Support' at Strato and 1&1 will become an expensive matter. To avoid horrendous additional costs, you should not ignore the PHP upgrade.
In many cases, upgrading to the currently recommended PHP version 8 can be completed in just a few steps.
The situation is different if a very old, outdated web software is still in use. In that case, the shutdown of PHP 5 is a good time for a fundamental overhaul of your website.
Preparing for the PHP Upgrade
Before upgrading the PHP version, you should ensure that your CMS or shop system is technically fully up to date.
All extensions and the template should therefore also be updated to the latest version beforehand.
If you do not make the necessary adjustments in time, the following costs will apply for PHP Extended Support PHP Extended Support:

The monthly fee for this additional service is therefore more expensive than an entry-level hosting package itself.
PHP 5.6 will become chargeable on March 1, 2019 PHP 7.0 already on February 1.
PHP 7.4 will also incur costs at the end of 2022.

Attention Strato customers
If, in a .htaccess configuration file on the webspace, an older PHP version was set manually, this configuration must be removed so that Extended Support is not billed further.
AddType application/x-httpd-php56 .php
These .htaccess files are usually located in the root directories, that is, at the top level of the respective CMS or shop installation.

Cancel PHP Extended Support
When the PHP version is upgraded, PHP Extended Support is automatically deactivated only at Strato, so that no further costs arise.
At 1und1, cancellation must be carried out separately in the IONOS Control Center under the menu item 'Contracts & Subscriptions'.
