PHP extended support cost trap at Strato / 1und1
By the end of 2022, using an older PHP version (5.6 - 7.4) as part of the "PHP Extended Support" at Strato and 1&1 will become an expensive matter. To avoid exorbitant additional costs, you should not ignore the PHP upgrade.
Often, updating to the currently recommended PHP version 8 can be completed in just a few steps.
The situation is different if you are still using very old, outdated web software. The discontinuation of PHP 5 is then a good time for a fundamental overhaul of your website.
Preparations for the PHP upgrade
Before upgrading the PHP version, you should make sure that your CMS or shop system is technically fully up to date.
All extensions and the template should therefore also be updated to the current version in advance.
If you do not make the adjustments in time, the following costs will be incurred for the PHP Extended Support:

The monthly fee for this additional service is therefore more expensive than an entry-level hosting package itself.
PHP 5.6 will become chargeable on 1 March 2019. PHP 7.0 already on 1 February.
PHP 7.4 will also incur costs at the end of 2022.

Strato customers, take note
If an older PHP version has been manually set in a .htaccess configuration file on the webspace, this configuration must be removed so that the Extended Support is no longer charged.
AddType application/x-httpd-php56 .php
These .htaccess files are usually located in the base directories, i.e. at the top level of the respective CMS or shop installation.

Cancel PHP Extended Support
When you increase the PHP version, PHP Extended Support is only automatically deactivated at Strato, so no further costs are incurred.
At 1und1, cancellation must be made separately in the IONOS Control Center under the menu item "Contracts & subscriptions".

The monthly fee for one website was about 10 EUR for me. Due to the artificially created price increase because of an "old" PHP version, the fee then climbed to 17.81 per month!
That is not only too much for me; it means that all sites (of my customers) will be moved away from IONOS to other providers that do not set such "traps" for their customers. There are several of them!
Today the first site is leaving IONOS completely for another provider, and more will follow in the next few weeks.

However, at Strato, maintenance of MySQL and MariaDB is neglected.
This leads to major problems with solutions such as Nextcloud.
Nextcloud 21 that supports PHP 8.0, however, requires MySQL 8.0. Strato, however, is still at MySQL 5.7.
MariaDB is not offered by Strato at all at the moment.
IONOS, on the other hand, offers MySQL 8.0 and MariaDB 10.
I am with Ionos, but I do not really understand the pricing model. Starting on 1.4., do I definitely have to pay 7.81 euros per month, or only if I do not upgrade to PHP 8.0 or higher?
In which case do I now have to cancel the PHP Extended Support?
I would appreciate a tip.

This means all domains should be switched to PHP 8(.1) by then to avoid unnecessary costs in most cases.
what does that cost on average for you?
